Jordan Henderson Shares "Difficult Moments" Following Saudi Transfer
English player Jordan Henderson states he has experienced "tough moments" since departing from Liverpool for Saudi Arabia and says he could "have made different decisions".
The veteran midfielder received backlash for departing Liverpool in 2023 to join Al-Ettifaq in a nation where homosexuality are against the law.
Henderson had been known as a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights and apologized for letting down or offending members in the community members when he left Saudi Arabia to sign with Ajax six months later.
England Selection and Reflections
Henderson missed out on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad but is back to the Premier League with Brentford and England's selection under Thomas Tuchel.
"I don't believe it was the factor why I didn't make the Euros," Henderson stated. "When I was in Saudi I believe I was in all the squads prior to the Euros."
"Regarding timing, with the situation in looking back, yes - perhaps I would have taken different decisions."
"However at the time that's how I felt and the decision I made was for various reasons and solely I know them reasons."
Personal Challenges
"Honestly speaking, over the past couple of years I have had some tough moments. It felt like a separation when I left Liverpool."
"Certainly I'm not without fault and I've made poor choices in the past. Of course I will have during my career."
"But all I've ever tried to do is the proper thing."
International Career
Henderson has gained 85 caps since making his England debut against France in 2010.
He is in Tuchel's squad to play Wales and Latvia this week and feels he still has a lot to provide on the pitch.
"The crucial people are the coach, the coaching staff and the players and what they think," said Henderson.
"Question them what they feel, if I am a cheerleader when I am here. I don't think one of the finest managers in Europe would be choosing me just to do that."
