Pakistan won by 93 runs
Pakistan halted world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by sealing a 93-run triumph in an entertaining and competitive first Test in the city of Lahore.
The Proteas, whose 10-match winning streak in the longest format ended with victory over Australia in the World Test Championship final in the month of June, were dismissed for 183 in pursuit of 277.
Having resumed on 51-2, they lost century-maker Tony de Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Afridi to the third ball of the day to shift the tightly balanced run chase in Pakistan's favour.
Left-arm spinner Noman, who secured 10 wickets for 191 runs in the match, removed Tristan Stubbs for 2 and bowled Brevis, who offered some resistance with a rapid 54.
Off-spinner Sajid also took advantage of significant spin to end opener Rickelton's innings - he faced 145 deliveries for 45 - and Shaheen returned in the afternoon session to dismiss the tail with a fine display of reverse swing.
He trapped Verreynne lbw for nineteen and bowled Subrayen and Rabada to secure the win.
It was each team's opening game of the 2025-27 Test championship cycle and propels Pakistan straight into second place behind leaders Australia.
The win was built around contributions of 93 by opener Imam and, importantly, number seven Salman Agha which boosted them to 378.
After that spinners Noman Ali and Sajid took advantage of helpful home pitches, as they had in their Test series win over the English team last year, to maintain their advantage.
The second and last match starts on October 20.
